Since 1 July 2024, real estate buyers in Austria benefit from a new regulation that offers significant financial relief. Earlier this year the government passed a housing package that includes fee exemptions for land registry and mortgage registrations. But what exactly does this mean for buyers? Here is an overview:

  • Since 1 July 2024, buyers of real estate up to 500,000 Euro (per person) can be exempt from land registry and mortgage registration fees (1,1 percent of the purchase price or 1,2 percent of the mortgage value).
  • This applies to purchase agreements since April 2024. Applications for entry in the land registry could be submitted from 1 July 2024.
  • The exemption requires the main residence to be registered in the acquired property and the previous residence to be vacated.
  • For credit-financed purchases, more than 90% of the loan must be used for the acquisition or renovation of the property.
