Location and Leisure

Bernhardsthal is an ideal starting point for cycling and hiking tours through the gently rolling landscape of the Weinviertel tri-border area.

Only about two minutes' walk away is the largest landscape pond in the Weinviertel. With a water surface of around 25 hectares, it offers numerous recreational opportunities such as walks, hiking and pedal boating. A special attraction is the historic Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn brick viaduct from 1839, the oldest preserved railway structure in Austria.

The Weinviertel is Austria's largest wine-growing region with around 13,000 hectares and is known far beyond the country's borders for its Grüner Veltliner. Numerous cellars, wine routes and traditional heurigen shape the region.

The eastern part of the Weinviertel, where Bernhardsthal lies, borders directly on the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The region around Laa an der Thaya offers additional leisure and recreation options with the only thermal spa in the Weinviertel. The nearby Leiser Berge with the Buschberg as the highest peak of the Weinviertel is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers.

Nature lovers also value the unique March–Thaya floodplains, which are among the most beautiful and ecologically valuable wetland landscapes in Central Europe. The rivers March and Thaya can be particularly well explored by canoe or kayak.

Large parts of this region belong to the well-known Weinviertel wine route Weinviertel Veltlinerland and offer a unique interplay of wine, culture and nature.
