Since 1. Juli 2024, real estate buyers in Austria benefit from a new regulation that provides significant financial relief. Earlier this year the government approved a housing package which includes an exemption from fees for land registry and mortgage entries. But what exactly does this mean for buyers? Here is an overview:

  • Since 1. Juli 2024 buyers of real estate up to 500.000 Euro (per person) can be exempt from land registry and mortgage entry fees (1,1 percent of the purchase price bzw. 1,2 percent of the mortgage value).
  • This applies to purchase contracts since April 2024. Applications for the entry into the land registry could be submitted from 1.7.2024.
  • The exemption requires registration of the main residence in the acquired property and giving up the previous apartment.
  • For credit-financed purchases, more than 90 % of the loan must be used for the acquisition or renovation of the property.
