Since July 1, 2024, real estate buyers in Austria benefit from a new regulation that provides substantial financial relief. Earlier this year the government approved a housing package that includes exemption from fees for land registry and mortgage entries. But what exactly does that mean for buyers? Here is an overview:

  • Since 1 July 2024 buyers of real estate up to 500.000 Euro (per person) can be exempt from land registry and mortgage entry fees (1,1 percent of the purchase price or 1,2 percent of the mortgage value).
  • This applies to purchase contracts since April 2024. Applications for entry in the land registry could be submitted from 1.7.2024.
  • The exemption requires the registration of the primary residence in the acquired property and the relinquishment of the previous apartment.
  • In mortgage-financed purchases more than 90 % of the loan must be used for the acquisition or renovation of the property.
