Lage

Schandorf, Croatian Čemba, Hungarian Csém, is a bilingual municipality in the district of Oberwart in Burgenland. It covers about 11 km² and has about 280 inhabitants. The district capital is about 20 km away.

The municipality of Schandorf is continually striving to offer something for all generations so that people feel comfortable in the town. In the town there is a cafe and a guesthouse as well as a Greissler wagon with the most important groceries. In Schandorf, in 2023, the first trilingual (German, Croatian and Hungarian) nursing home in Burgenland opened.

A lively club life (fire department, Tamburizza, Kinderfreunde, Tractor Club, Pensioners Association and Culture Association) ensures that you quickly connect or make new friends in the town. A shuttle service has been set up for kindergarten and school children. This ensures your children go safely to kindergarten or school and back home.

History

The area around Schandorf was already settled in the Late Iron Age and probably formed the center of the entire area. In the Schandorf forest there are 170 tumuli, up to 16 meters high and up to 40 meters in diameter. The graves date from the Hallstatt period.

Documentarily, the village community was first named in 1244 as “villa Chem” when the Hungarian king Béla IV. handed over the old castle Óvár to the lords of Csém/Schandorf for rebuilding. At that time Schandorf was a German-settled farmer village that belonged to the Hungarian border guard and protection settlement of the Gyepű system.

After the 15th century, the fate of Schandorf was closely linked with the lordship of Schlaining under Andreas Baumkircher, and the town came in 1537 to the possession of the counts Batthyány, who repopulated the village depopulated by the Turkish wars in 1543 with Croatian farmers.

The municipal seal of 1872 shows a standing sheaf of grain with crossed grain reapers with a sickle and bears the Hungarian inscription Csémi Község (Municipality of Schandorf). Since 1898, due to Budapest's Magyarization policy, the Hungarian place name Csém had to be used.

After Burgenland was annexed to Austria in 1921, Schandorf joined Austria on 10 January 1923 as one of the last villages to be re-integrated.

Because of the Municipal Structural Improvement Act, Schandorf was merged on 1 January 1971 with Dürnbach and Schachendorf to the Großgemeinde Schachendorf. Since 1995, Schandorf has again been its own municipality.

Border Crossing Schandorf–Narda

Since 1 June 2007 the municipality of Schandorf has had a border crossing to Hungary, which may only be used on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. From this border crossing one can directly reach the Hungarian neighboring municipality Narda.
