About this house
A house with a signature
This house tells a story – and not just since today.
Arch. DI Rudolf Schober, one of the influential architects of Oberwart in the second half of the 20th century, had his own residential house built here. It was planned by him for his own family and was inhabited by him for many years. A historical photograph of the topping-out ceremony of the “EF-Haus Schober, Mozartgasse 7” shows Rudolf Schober as the builder together with his family, the builder and an employee of his architectural office. The photograph is dated by the Momentothek Oberwart to around the year 1962.
Schober was initially employed by the Oberwart construction company Gustav Steurer and subsequently ran his own architectural office until 1988. Around 90 buildings erected in Oberwart are attributed to him – including public buildings, schools, residential buildings, the triple sports hall as well as numerous single-family houses. The municipal authority describes him as an architect who significantly shaped the appearance of Oberwart for decades.
His own house still bears this signature today.
On a plot of around 710 m², approximately 251 m² of living space as well as additional ancillary and usable areas were created. The house does not follow the usual scheme of two superimposed floors. Instead, the rooms develop over several staggered levels that respond to the natural terrain and are connected by stairs.
The centerpiece of the living area is the exceptionally large and tall living room. Large window areas open the space to the garden, while wooden ceilings, wall claddings and the many preserved built-in furniture have preserved the original architectural character.
The kitchen and dining room form further independent living areas.
- Bedroom
- two additional rooms
- Bathroom
- a WC
- two terraces – one to the street side and one to the garden
On the lower levels the spatial concept continues. Here, among other things, there is a generous music room that can also be used as a studio, library, work or retreat room. Above the conservatory you have direct access to the garden. Two further smaller rooms, a laundry room with shower and WC as well as various ancillary and cellar rooms complete the range of rooms.
An interior spiral staircase connects the levels. Outside, another stair leads along the house to the different garden areas.
The property also includes:
- a garage
- boiler room
- two cellar rooms
- a former tank room
The house is currently heated by a gas central heating system. According to the owners, the roof covering was renewed around 25 years ago.
This house is not a new building and does not want to be one. Much is visibly from the time of its creation. However, it is precisely the generous room proportions, the built-in furniture, wooden surfaces, the special sequence of levels and the connection between interior space and garden that characterize this house.
Anyone who is looking exclusively for a modern standard solution may want to change this house.
Those who appreciate architecture, originality and the history of a house will find here something that can hardly be newly created today.
