Historical information

Seyring, located in the Austrian heartland of Lower Austria, on the edge of the Marchfeld. In 1805, the cadastral municipality of Gerasdorf was constituted. After the annexation to the Third Reich in 1938, the town was incorporated into Vienna. In 1954, the municipality became independent again – with the Territorial Amendment Act and the reintegration of Vienna’s outlying municipalities into the federal state of Lower Austria. It was not until 1972 that the municipality of Seyring was incorporated into the municipality of Gerasdorf.

In May 1992, Gerasdorf was elevated to a market municipality. On 17 December 1998, the Lower Austrian Parliament resolved to grant Gerasdorf city status.

The oldest places in the municipality are Gerasdorf and Seyring. Gerasdorf is first mentioned in documents around 1200 in the Klosterneuburg tradition book; “Viricus des Gerhartesdorf” is a witness to a donation to the monastery.

The oldest documentary mentions of Seyring also date from the 11th century; the first mentions are found as “Seuringe”. Allegedly, a ring of lakes once surrounded the village, which could be the origin of the place name.

In the present cadastral municipality of Seyring, Seyring airfield with the code name “Wetterfrosch” and an air combat school (Vienna-Seyring) were located during the Second World War. During the Balkan campaign in 1941, the 4.(F) Reconnaissance Group 121 Air Fleet) was stationed there. From 1944, this military airfield was the target of Allied air raids. Bomb craters in the surrounding forests and remains of this airport – such as a concrete runway, earth embankments around former gun emplacements and foundation remains of the hangars – can still be seen in and around Seyring today.
