Seyring near Vienna lies in Lower Austria on the northern Vienna city boundary and as the only municipality of the Wien-Umgebung district on the left side of the Danube. Seyring belongs to the Großgemeinde Gerasdorf. The area of the Großgemeinde covers 35,2 square kilometers. 1,17 percent of the area is forested.

Transport connections

• The Schnellbahn station (S2) is reachable in ca. 3 minutes on foot (281 m). With the S2 (Schnellbahn) you can reach, for example: Vienna, Wolkersdorf, Mistelbach or Laa an der Thaya. The Schnellbahn takes about 7 minutes to Vienna.
• By car you need about 5 minutes to the Vienna city boundary (about 3,0 km). At the new highway exit S1 you are in about 2 minutes.

History

In the Austrian core country Lower Austria, on the edge of the Marchfeld, lies Seyring. In 1805 the cadastral municipality Gerasdorf was constituted. After the Anschluss to the Third Reich in 1938 the town of Vienna was incorporated. In 1954 the municipality – with the Territorial Reform Act and the re-incorporation of the Vienna fringe municipalities into the state of Lower Austria – became independent again. Only in 1972 was the municipality of Seyring incorporated into the municipality Gerasdorf.

In May 1992 Gerasdorf was raised to a market municipality. On 17 December 1998 the NÖ Landtag decided on the urban status of Gerasdorf.

The oldest places in the municipality are Gerasdorf and Seyring. Gerasdorf is first mentioned around 1200 in the Klosterneuburger Tratitonsbuch, "Viricus des Gerhartesdorf" is a witness to a donation to the monastery.

The oldest documentary mentions of Seyring also date from the 11th century; the first mentions are as "Seuringe". Allegedly a ring of lakes used to surround the village, which could be the origin of the place name.

In the current cadastral municipality of Seyring there was during the Second World War the airfield Seyring with the code name "Wetterfrosch" as well as an air warfare school (Vienna-Seyring). In the Balkans campaign of 1941 the 4.(F) Reconnaissance Group 121 Luftflotte) was stationed there. From 1944 this military airfield was the target of Allied air attacks. Bomb craters in the surrounding forests and remnants of this airfield - such as a concreted runway, earthen walls around former gun positions and foundations of the hangars - are still visible in and around Seyring today.
