History

In the Austrian core region of Lower Austria, at the edge of the Marchfeld, Seyring. In 1805 the cadastral municipality Gerasdorf was constituted. After the annexation to the Third Reich in 1938, Vienna was incorporated. In 1954 the municipality – with the Territorial Change Act and the reattachment of the Wiener outer municipalities to the state of Lower Austria – became independent again. Only in 1972 was the municipality Seyring incorporated into the municipality Gerasdorf.

In May 1992 Gerasdorf was elevated to a market municipality. On December 17, 1998 the Lower Austrian Parliament decided on the urban status of Gerasdorf.

The oldest places in the municipality are Gerasdorf and Seyring. Gerasdorf is mentioned for the first time around 1200 in the Klosterneuburg Tratitonsbuch, "Viricus des Gerhartesdorf" is a witness to a donation to the monastery.

The oldest documentary mentions of Seyring also date from the 11th century; there are first mentions as "Seuringe". Allegedly a ring of lakes used to surround the town, which could be the origin of the place name.

In the current cadastral municipality of Seyring, during World War II there was the airfield Seyring with the code name "Wetterfrosch" as well as an air combat school (Vienna-Seyring). During the Balkans Campaign in 1941, the 4.(F) Reconnaissance Group 121 Luftflotte was stationed there. From 1944 this military airfield was the target of Allied air raids. Bomb craters in the surrounding forests and remnants of this airfield – such as the concrete runway, earthen walls around former gun positions and foundations of the hangars – are still visible in and around Seyring today.
