Rechnitz (Hungarian Rohonc, Croatian Rohunac, Romani Rochonca) is a market municipality in the district of Oberwart in Burgenland, has about 3,000 inhabitants and covers 43,77 km².

The market municipality Rechnitz lies on the south slope of the Günser Mountains, which is also known as Rechnitzer Schiefergebirge or Rechnitzer Fenster, at the foot of the 884 m high Geschriebenstein. The wooded low mountain range transitions there into vineyards and orchards, followed by the wide fields in the foothills of the pannonian lowland.

Sunny, mild climate favors farming, forestry as well as wine and fruit growing, with apricot cultivation holding particular significance here.

The town lies directly on the border with Hungary and has since 1991 a border crossing to Bozsok, 22 kilometers northwest of Szombathely (Steinamanger).

The neolithic settlement of the municipal area is evidenced by Linearbandkeramik house findings and three ring-ditch installations of the Lengyel culture. By around 500 v. Chr. the plain south of the Geschriebenstein was inhabited, which is evidenced by finds from the Celtic period. Significant finds were also made from Roman times, e.g., a section of the Roman water conduit that supplied the town of Savaria with spring water.

The idyll of Rechnitz and surroundings and the astonishingly hilly landscape of Burgenland is increasingly becoming a popular recreation and leisure area, especially after the creation of the Naturpark Geschriebenstein-Irottkö. Numerous varied hiking and excursion possibilities (through Rechnitz run the Burgenland Weitwanderweg as well as the East Austrian Borderland Path 07) a splendidly located bathing lake with excellent water quality, tennis courts, riding opportunities, cozy Buschenschänken are among the leisure offerings. Caritas Burgenland also runs in Rechnitz a children's nursery for the youngest and a kindergarten. In the town there is a primary school, a new middle school and also a music school. A Catholic and a Protestant church fit nicely into the townscape.

Gastronomically, Rechnitz awaits with Buschenschänken, cafés, a lovely bakery and several restaurants. Local supply stores are also easily reachable in the center.

Highlights: The Go-Kart race track in the Speedarena is known and popular in Rechnitz. The wine education trail begins at the Reichermühle vinothek and after about 1.5 km ends at the Tiefen Weg and leads back to the vinothek: on information boards, all relevant information about the Rechnitzer wine cultivation is presented in an illustrative way. A short version of the local history, poems and illustrations complements and lightens the information.

The town of Oberwart is about 25 km away from Rechnitz. Via the federal road you reach Oberwart in about 23 minutes by car, where, among other things, a large shopping center, numerous educational facilities, all facilities for medical care, cultural institutions and gastronomy are located. Via the highway ramp you reach the federal capital Vienna in about 1 h 45 min.
