One of the first addresses in Vienna – since the 13th century.

At Fleischmarkt there was not only the famous marketplace, but also the oldest seat of the butchers. Due to the proximity to the port on the then unregulated Danube, the Holzmarkt was later held.

The address has over centuries been a traditional magnet for inns that housed merchants from all over Europe. This is reflected by the nearby Griechengasse.

In the late Middle Ages the inn Gasthof zum Goldenen Hirschen stood prominently at the corner of Rotenturmstraße and Fleischmarkt. Some houses in the core Gothic, later barockized facades along the street still reflect the wealth of past eras. In the 1830s the first commercial building was erected at the site. In 1909 followed a legendary new building: the “Residenzpalast”, built according to the plans of the well-known Jugendstil architect Arthur Baron.

It was an architecturally valuable, and technically visionary building, also due to the use of the then-emerging reinforced concrete piles.

A few years ago the historic stock of the famous Jugendstil object was revitalized.

In collaboration with the Bundesdenkmalamt, the generous historic ceramic façades on the Fleischmarkt side and on Rotenturmstraße were restored to original fidelity. The impressive floor-to-ceiling glazing in the lower floors was carefully restored. The technology used again now focuses on sustainability and maximum future readiness. The historic house welcomes its new users with High-end fittings – in light-flooded, up to 3,60 m high working spaces of the fin de siècle.

One thing is certain: Fleischmarkt 1 is and remains the first house on the square.
