Since 1 July 2024, real estate buyers in Austria benefit from a new regulation that offers significant financial relief. Earlier this year, the government passed a housing package which includes a waiver of fees for land registry and mortgage entries. But what exactly does this mean for buyers? Here is an overview:

• Since 1 July 2024 buyers of real estate up to 500.000 Euro (per person) can be exempt from land registry and mortgage entry fees (1,1 percent of the purchase price or 1,2 percent of the mortgage value).
• This applies to purchase agreements since April 2024. Applications for entry in the land registry could be submitted from 1.7.2024.
• The exemption requires registering the main residence at the acquired property and giving up the previous apartment.
• In mortgage-financed purchases, more than 90% of the loan must be used for the purchase or renovation of the property.
