Since 1 July 2024 property buyers in Austria benefit from a new regulation that offers significant financial relief. At the beginning of the year the government adopted a housing package that includes an exemption from land register and lien registration fees. But what exactly does this mean for buyers? • Since 1 July 2024 buyers of real estate up to 500.000 Euro (per person) can be exempted from land register and lien registration fees (1,1 percent of the purchase price or 1,2 percent of the lien value).
• This applies to purchase contracts since April 2024. Applications for entry in the land register could be submitted from 1.7.2024.
• The exemption requires the registration of the main residence in the acquired property and the abandonment of the previous apartment.
• For purchases financed by credit more than 90 % of the loan must be used for the acquisition or the renovation of the property.
